Ginettamad Posted September 23, 2008 Report Posted September 23, 2008 (edited) Anyone know if you can retrofit a cruise control to a 99 AFN TDI as some cars of that age had them fitted but mine hasn't?Whats involved, if I found a car with it at a scrappers? Are the Petrol model cruise controls the same as our local scrapper has one in?Harvey Edited September 23, 2008 by Ginettamad Quote
bj2004 Posted September 23, 2008 Report Posted September 23, 2008 hione way to tell is start engine and rev to 2000 then keeping revs steady press brake pedal if engine slows to idle your ecu will take a cruise control i dont know if its same for petrol i retro fitted mine using a kit from e-bay dead easy only 5 wires Quote
tdi90 Posted September 23, 2008 Report Posted September 23, 2008 (edited) Petrol cruise is totally different to tdi cruise. Petrol is vacum, tdi is electrical. You need to check: For a switch (almost the same as the brake light switch) on the clutch pedal. (get a torch and practice ya yoga  )Take off the top and bottom steering colum surrounds, and if there is a black connector plugged into a blank socket near to the indicator stalk connector, you can add cruise control. Buy a 2nd hand stalk unit with the cc switches & swop it over for yours (Disconnect the battery first, as you'll be pulling about very close to the airbag)Next, get vagcom or pop along to ya local VW/Ford dealer and ask them to put in the 'login in' code to activate it. I know this works, cos I did my TDi yesterday :D Edited September 23, 2008 by tdi90 Quote
bj2004 Posted September 23, 2008 Report Posted September 23, 2008 hithe kit i got had the wireing harness with it you get stalk cables and instructions for abou Quote
Ginettamad Posted September 24, 2008 Author Report Posted September 24, 2008 Thanks I'll try that test with the brake pedal and look for the socket. Is there a black box to fit as well as the Column switches or are the switches all I need from the scrappers? Anyone live near Tadcaster/York with the VAG com thingy bob to check my car. Its a Late MK1 1999 TDi AFN 110?Who sells the ebay aftermarket unit by the way and does it work well?Harvey Quote
insider Posted September 24, 2008 Report Posted September 24, 2008 No black box as the cruise control is ECU controlled. The switches feed directly into the ECU via the wiring loom.(I'm not sure if there's a difference between the switches for petrol / diesel models though - Ford petrol models have a separate C/C module and actuator) Quote
tdi90 Posted September 24, 2008 Report Posted September 24, 2008 All you will need is a new stork unit. Doesnt matter if it came from a petrol or diesel (mine came from a petrol). http://shop.ebay.co.uk/?_from=R40&_trk...indicator+stalk also do a search for alhambra /sharan stalks. They do come up cheaper, just keep looking (as I said, mine was Quote
Ginettamad Posted September 26, 2008 Author Report Posted September 26, 2008 So TDi90, looks like your Gal is same year as mine and a petrol stalk worked ok on a Tdi? I'll do a search for the stalks then but will I still need the ECU altering as I suspect that will be costly at a dealers? Bloody hate having to go to main dealers! Do the stalks need to be from a set year and specced car as I was told recently?I had a quote of Quote
tdi90 Posted September 26, 2008 Report Posted September 26, 2008 Pm now on the way to ya fella. Quote

tdi90 Posted October 11, 2008 Report Posted October 11, 2008 Tell them you need to put a login code in the engine ecu. tbh, ya better off going to a vag garage. Quote
tdi90 Posted October 11, 2008 Report Posted October 11, 2008 If the laptop has a usb port ya want one of these http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VAG-COM-USB-VW-Audi-...id=p3286.c0.m14If it aint, ya want one of these http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VAG-COM-SERIAL-VW-Au...id=p3286.c0.m14 They both should come with vagcom 409. If not, download it here www.rosstech.com Activation is as per my pm. Quote
gregers Posted October 11, 2008 Report Posted October 11, 2008 just read the advert from your 1st link tdi90 and it says it can match keys???? or does that require the full working version of vag-com??? Quote
tdi90 Posted October 12, 2008 Report Posted October 12, 2008 As far as I am aware, Vagcom cannot key match or re code stereos. There are no options in my fully registered vagcom anyhoooo (409.1). It may be something the seller has added? Quote
Ginettamad Posted October 13, 2008 Author Report Posted October 13, 2008 Thanks I've ordered the USB one so fingers crossed I can find a Laptop to borrow with USB. On hols from Friday so I'll be back with questions once I try it out.Anyone got good step by step Laptop loading instructions to activate the Cruise stalks? Tdi ?Harvey Quote
bj2004 Posted October 13, 2008 Report Posted October 13, 2008 Activating Cruise Control (DBW) with VAG-COM:ECU's often come with cruise control de-activated.If this is the case, there will not be a letter "G" in the Componentfield of VAG-COM when connected to the Engine.[select][01 - Engine][Login - 11]Enter 11463 to activate cruise control[Do It!]After doing this procedure, there should be a letter "G" in theComponent field. Ginettamad Posted November 2, 2008 Author Report Posted November 2, 2008 bj2004I have loaded vag-com but no idea if its loaded properly as I had no instructions? Then tested and it took a lot of fiddling with the cable to find the interface but when I ticked the dumb mode it linked up so I followed the commands as you say but nothing changed on screen after the login 11 and number? It just shows the car details before login11 and those details stay on screen after i try the code?My car is a 1999 so is the code the correct one? Any way I can test the software to see if its loaded correctly? The fault code search said No faults so thats good.HarveyAnyone coming near Tadcaster A1 / M1 who can help? Quote
Ginettamad Posted November 10, 2008 Author Report Posted November 10, 2008 Sorry I missed your reply PM Tdi. Still not sorted CC and had to give boorowed Laptop back but from reading about VAG could the driver by wrongly loaded? It seems to work to a degree but when login on button pressed the fields dont change? No idea how to sort this but it may explain why following the instructions dont seem to change anything on the component field which remains showing my ecu number I presume?Any VAG boffins out there that can show me step by step or button by button?H Quote
tdi90 Posted November 11, 2008 Report Posted November 11, 2008 Vagcom can be a bit of git to load onto a Vista machine. You have to run the program for combatility with XP and run as admin Also check that the vagcom cable is in the correct usb port. iirc, vagcom only has 4 test ports, where as some laptops have more, or list them as different numbers so you have to experiment or assign the cable a usb port between 1 - 4 on the laptop. Loading onto XP should be a doddle bar checking the usb port assignment Dont forget that you could also have a faulty stalk unit. The first one I brought, the cc 'on' & 'ressume' buttons didnt work. Quote
Ginettamad Posted November 13, 2008 Author Report Posted November 13, 2008 Laptop running Xp I think not Vista, not sure how to run as admin or compatability test? Ltop has two usb ports and it must be working to check for fault codes which seemed to work? It took a lot of attempts to find the interface until I used dumb mode which worked. When going to Login 11 button nothing seemed to change in the number fields when I added the code? No G suddenley appeared anywhere?I noitced my lead only has a few pins in it for some reason?Harvey Quote
